10-Year Target™

The 10-Year Target is the single long-range goal a company is aiming at, far enough out to shape structural decisions and close enough to feel real. One target, not a list, and near enough that the current team will still be around for it. Most teams pick a revenue figure with a date, and the useful ones add a sentence about what the business looks like by then.

How EOS® uses the 10-Year Target

It sits on page one of the V/TO®, directly under the Core Focus™, and it is the anchor the shorter horizons are worked back from. The three-year picture is a checkpoint on the way to it, and the one-year plan is a checkpoint on the way to that. The target is revisited at the annual session and rarely changed.

A ten-year number is too far away to plan against, which is the point. It sets the size of the company being built, and that decides whether you hire a bookkeeper or a finance director, and whether the current building becomes a problem in year two or year six. Teams that skip it tend to make those calls late.

Worked example: A regional landscaping firm at nine million dollars set forty million by 2036, with a line saying the founder would own it and not run it. The immediate consequence was a hire nobody had budgeted for. They brought in a general manager two years earlier than planned, because forty million with the founder in every job is not a business.
