Core Focus™

The Core Focus is a two-part answer to why the company exists and what it should stick to: its purpose or cause, and the niche it is genuinely good at. It sits near the top of the V/TO® and works as a filter. Opportunities that fall outside it get declined, which is the whole reason for writing it down.

How EOS® uses the Core Focus

EOS asks a leadership team to agree the Core Focus early, because most of the arguments later come from opportunities that do not fit it. Once written, it gets used out loud. A new product idea, an acquisition or a large customer request is held against the two lines before anybody builds a case for it.

Growth companies rarely die of too few opportunities. They spread themselves across four half-served markets because saying no to revenue feels irresponsible. Having the refusal written down in advance, agreed by the whole leadership team, turns the no into a decision the company already took rather than one person's judgment on a Thursday afternoon.

Worked example: A commercial cleaning company wrote its niche as recurring nightly service for medical offices. Six weeks later a hotel group asked for a one-time deep clean worth ninety thousand dollars. The operations lead wanted it and the owner did not. The two lines settled it in ten minutes instead of over a month.
