Self-implementing

Self-implementing means running EOS® from the books and free worksheets, without hiring a facilitator, for a few hundred dollars and a lot of discipline. The tools are all published. What you go without is the neutral person who runs the session and asks the question the room is avoiding.

What self-implementing looks like in practice

EOS Worldwide publishes the books, sells the toolbox and runs an online academy, so nothing about the system is hidden. A self-implementing team usually appoints one of its own leaders to facilitate, which works until the day the argument involves that person. Many teams run two years alone and then buy help for the annual session only.

The honest test is whether your leadership team argues productively without a referee. If quarterly planning already ends in decisions with names against them, the books will get you most of the way for the price of a dinner. If it ends in polite agreement and nothing changing, that is precisely what a facilitator is for.

Worked example: A twelve-person software company ran on the books for five quarters. The Scorecard and the weekly meeting stuck immediately. The vision work never quite finished, because the two founders disagreed about the target market and their own facilitator was one of them. They bought two days of outside help for the annual and settled it.
