IDS®

IDS stands for identify, discuss, solve, the three-step routine EOS® uses to close a problem in the meeting rather than discussing it again next week. Identify is the hard part, because whatever gets raised is usually a symptom. Discuss is capped. Solve ends in an action with a name and a date, or a decision to do nothing.

How EOS uses IDS

IDS takes about sixty of the ninety minutes in a Level 10 Meeting™, and it runs on the top-ranked issues rather than the whole list. The rule that changes a meeting most is that discussion stops once the answer is clear. Most solutions become a to-do for the coming week, and the larger ones become a Rock for the quarter.

Meetings fail by discussing five problems and closing none of them. Naming the real issue before anybody proposes a fix is where the time is saved. Half of what a team raises is a consequence of something else already on the list. Ending with an owner and a date is what stops the item reappearing next Wednesday.

Worked example: A dental group raised late patient notes for the third week running. Identifying it took ten minutes and moved it from a compliance complaint to a scheduling one, because two clinicians had no admin gap after their last appointment. The fix was a fifteen-minute change to the booking template, owned by the practice manager and done by Friday.
